Easy, Affordable Solutions to Improve Essential Skills

TOWES is best known for assessing Essential Skills, but we are also committed to improving them!  TOWES has a suite of curricula and tools that will meet your diverse workplace and educational training needs.  Current products include:

Building Workplace Essential Skills (Instructors’s Guide and Learner Workbook)
Building Workplace Essential Skills is a hard-copy curriculum that covers the foundations needed to build strong reading text, document use, and numeracy skills.  Learners develop and practice these skills while gaining exposure to Canadian workplace documents and situations.  The content is organized into three sections that take about 20 hours each to complete.  The Building Workplace Essential Skills Instructor’s Guide enables instructors to deliver the training in a classroom environment or workplace training program.

On Target!
On Target is an easy to use resource guide that will help ESL learner improve their Essential Skills while increasing their English language proficiency.  On Target follows the guidelines of the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) and efficiently assesses the skill levels of a broad range of ESL learners.  Practical assessment tasks which are based on everyday language situations provide a simple way to measure learners’ abilities in relation to national standards.  Two versions of the tool are available.  On Target Stage One measures basic proficiency (CLB levels 1-4) and On Target Stage Two measures intermediate proficiency (CLB levels 5-8).

Skills for Working, Learning & Living
Skills for Working, Learning & Living (SWLL) teaches crucial foundational and life skills that will help young people or new employees prepare for learning and their future career.  SWLL contains a self-assessment activity along with lessons on topics like team work, leadership, goal setting, time management, problem solving, and decision making.

The Wining Label
Every workplace in Canada uses the national Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS).  The Wining Label is an interactive DVD that teaches WHMIS in a simple and easy to understand format.

 A Day on the Job - New in 2009
TOWES will soon be releasing integrated Essential Skills curriculum called “A Day on the Job.”  As the title suggests, A Day on the Job allows learners to experience the worksite where they integrate their reading text, document use, numeracy and problem solving skills to carry out normal daily workplace tasks.  A Day on the Job for Welders, Pipefitters, Carpenters, and Electricians will be available early in 2009.
